È stata una delle battaglie della Crusca, e ora il tribunale europeo ha dato la vittoria all'Italia. Anzi all'italiano. Quindi è logico che Nicoletta Maraschio, presidente dell'Accademia, sia soddisfatta. «È un risultato positivo. Però...»
Però?
«Il primo ricorso è di qualche anno fa, già nel 2008 il tribunale aveva cancellato un bando. La questione è che cosa succederà ora. La sentenza dà una indicazione chiara alla Commissione: deve pubblicare i bandi in tutte le lingue ufficiali».
Una svolta?
«Speriamo che sia una soluzione definitiva, in linea con la Carta di Nizza che vieta la discriminazione linguistica, e che colmi finalmente la frattura fra principi teorici e prassi concreta della Ue».

"Curiously enough," wrote Nabokov, "one cannot read a book; one can only reread it." A maxim worth keeping in mind when tackling the work of novelist and Italian cultural philosopher Claudio Magris. In a non-linear narrative that freewheels across two centuries, asylum inmate and militant anti-communist Comrade Cippico relates the story of his life. Or rather lives – for Cippico also believes himself to be Jørgen Jørgensen, 19th-century adventurer and one-time king of Iceland. The stories overlap and intertwine – often within the same paragraph – as history is presented as a bloody series of prisons, revolutions, sea journeys and shipwrecks. It is heady, disorientating stuff. Thankfully, you are always left with the language to cling to. And herein lies the novel's real strength: the translation by Anne Milano Appel is sublime, the prose rich and lyrical, creating a dreamlike intensity that makes even the more impenetrable passages a joy to wade through. Yes, this is an infuriatingly difficult read. It also might be a work of flawed genius. But such grandiose claims are still a reread away …

Those of us translators and interpreters who attend industry conferences and follow what is going on in industry associations have noticed an interesting phenomenon lately: Twitter finally being embraced and acknowledged as a genuine discussion and informative platform for the translation industry. I have been on Twitter for almost four years now, and I have seen language professionals participating in the platform from day one. In the early days people still overwhelmingly–and annoyingly–posted too much personal stuff that did not add any value to other users. Then some decided to tweet live from industry events, and soon others found out how invaluable Twitter really was when it comes to being informed about latest trends and ideas in our profession. This has intensified lately, and I have also witnessed some great discussions about relevant topics such as machine translation, business practices and CAT tool features. Despite the lively discussions and sharing of ideas, however, it seemed until a few months ago that Twitter was still some alternative life or underground activity–it was simply not mainstream yet. ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) — "Have you considered how easy it is for us Norwegians to learn English?" asks Jan Terje Faarlund, professor of linguistics at the University of Oslo. "Obviously there are many English words that resemble ours. But there is something more: its fundamental structure is strikingly similar to Norwegian. We avoid many of the usual mistakes because the grammar is more or less the same.

Faarlund and his colleague Joseph Emmonds, visiting professor from Palacký University in the Czech Republic, now believe they can prove that English is in reality a Scandinavian language, in other words it belongs to the Northern Germanic language group, just like Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Icelandic and Faroese. This is totally new and breaks with what other language researchers and the rest of the world believe, namely that English descends directly from Old English. Old English, or Anglo-Saxon, is a West Germanic language, which the Angles and Saxons brought with them from Northern Germany and Southern Jylland when they settled in the British Isles in the fifth century.

"Discriminatorio usare soltanto inglese, francese e tedesco". Lo ha stabilito la Corte di giustizia europea, cui si era rivolto il nostro Paese dopo che il Tribunale dell'Unione aveva respinto il ricorso per l'annullamento di bandi trilingui. Via libera anche al meccanismo europeo di stabilità

BRUXELLES - No ai bandi di concorso pubblicati solo in inglese, francese e tedesco. Costituiscono una "discriminazione" fondata sulla lingua. Tutte le 23 lingue della Ue sono 'ufficiali'. La Corte di giustizia europea ha annullato la sentenza di primo grado del settembre 2010 dando così ragione all'Italia, che aveva fatto ricorso contro la pratica di pubblicare i bandi in tre sole lingue. Il no della Corte si estende anche all'obbligo di sostenere le prove di selezione in una di queste tre lingue.

La percentuale di chi parla l'italiano è destinata a calare. Necessari investimenti sostanziali in tecnologie linguistiche

Investire o scomparire. È questo il futuro della lingua italiana su intenet. A dirlo è il rapporto La lingua italiana nell’era digitale, condotto dall’Istituto di linguistica computazionale del Cnr di Pisa (Ilc-Cnr). La percentuale delle pagine web in italiano a livello mondiale è raddoppiata passando dall’1,5% nel 1998 al 3,05% nel 2005 ed è stato stimato che nel 2004, in tutto il mondo, fossero 30,4 milioni le persone che parlavano italiano online.
