What role has technology played in the history of Western translation? Did translators translate differently before the codex was invented? Did the invention of print revolutionise practices of translation? To what extent has the computer altered the practice and theory of translation?

This lecture brings together insights from translation studies, the history of books, and technology studies to throw new light on age-old debates about word-for-word and sense-for-sense translation.
